Every January 1st the birds, trees and animals see no change and go along fine and so does the Universe. The Universe is infinite and every discussion of it rubs on me reminding me the only question I want answered, “How big is space?”. No one has the answer and no one ever will. Putting a number to it as answer, is the smallness of not knowing, the vastness of this emptiness.

My new year starts on my birthday, when I complete another trip around the sun. I’m a miniscule particle and completing a sun roundtrip is my planetary traversal in the Universe. 😊

So, as this calendar year picked by someone rolls over to a new number, it’s easier to stay simple, only look at things in front of us, family, friends, society, inflation and enjoy a personal thing or two and even the world cup soccer win by Lionel Messi’s Argentina or the great Pele not reaching to that next new number year.

The calendar year end is always a solemn time of remembrance for me. I run over memories and as the calendar is changing I ponder over events during the past 365 days. The memories are always of loved ones who brought me into this world. Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Anand” is my #1 movie and a gem I watched many times. Anand reminds, ‘Jo mit rahi hai, vo sharer hai’, so why ask for something ‘jo ghat raha hai’. The million moments of living we get everyday are the only treasure we have.

January 1st is a date reminding me I have to start thinking about doing my taxes for the previous year. What does 2023 mean, to me and the world? Will discover, ‘As time goes by’. As I remember loved ones, including one born after me and left earlier, I know I too can be gone in a flash and for me, anything meaningful to add in the world is contribution towards progressive learning, share, which is earth’s only fact in 10,000 years of human existence. Once a person is gone, rest is ‘Mithya’. Anything personal, people or belonging will dissolve over passage of time. This thoughtful Maithilisharan Gupt poem resonates with result of human existence has always shown us reason and path to move forward.
